Selling on eBay Canada. How do fees and taxes work?
Selling on eBay Canada. How do fees and taxes work?
Been selling on eBay in the US for a while and want to expand into the Canadian market. The platform itself is familiar but the fee structure, taxes and all the additional charges up there are a different story. Before committing to anything I want to understand what I am actually looking at in terms of costs. Is there somewhere to see all of this laid out clearly?
Re: Selling on eBay Canada. How do fees and taxes work?
Canada has its own eBay fee structure which does not mirror the US one exactly, so it is worth going through it separately rather than assuming everything transfers over. On top of the standard selling fees there is GST and HST to factor in depending on the province your buyer is in, which affects the final numbers more than people expect. Currency conversion is another layer since you are dealing in Canadian dollars, and if your PayPal or payment account is in USD the exchange rate eats into margins quietly. Worth running the numbers on a few of your typical listings before scaling anything up.

Doing all that math manually for every listing gets tedious fast, especially when you are trying to compare margins across different price points and categories. The cleaner way is to run it through a calculator built specifically for the Canadian market that accounts for all the fees and charges at once. For that there is an eBay fees calculator for Canada here https://easync.io/ebay-fees-calculator/ca/ . Plug in your numbers and you get a clear picture of what actually lands in your pocket after everything is taken out.
